Highland Country Club began with 86 acres of pastureland, the use of which was generously donated. With no other assets save those of faith, hope, and determination to build something that would contribute to health and happiness, the pioneers of Highland laid the foundation for an institution unique in the family of country clubs. It is doubtful any club in the world had given its members so much for so little.
In the mid 1950's, Grover Richards, son in-law of Clarence Watson, sold Highland Country Club to the Balfour Realty Trust. The Balfour Realty Trust operated the Club through the Balfour Company. The Club had committees of members to plan golfing tournaments and a variety of social events. Club records from the time are hard to come by, but the golf course functioned and improved during this period.
In 1962, C. R. Yeager built the house by the pond on the eighth fairway. The architect for the project was Harold Washburn.
In 1970, the Balfour Realty Trust acquired an additional six and 3/10 acres from Harry L. Capron, which increased the total golf course acreage to 92 and 3/10 acres. The Balfour Trust intended, through the purchase of the Club and additional Berndt and Industrial parcels, to build a manufacturing plant on the site. A plant was never built, however, due to opposition from neighbors and various city boards.
An offer to purchase the course for $500,000 was proposed to the members. A committee was formed to plan the purchase. Its members were leader Jerome Ottmar, Sam Stone , S, McCormick, Clint Owens, Ray Coogan, Leland Smith, C.R. Yeager, T. Galvin, and Bob Deam. The members raised $210,000 through the purchase of interest bearing bond, and financed the remainder of the purchase price through a mortgage signed by several Attleboro banks. On December 22, 1975, documents were signed and ownership of Highland Country Club was transferred to the members.
